New Drywall Technologies You May Never Have Heard Of

Greg Cabral • April 10, 2023

It's amazing to us the changes going on in the drywall industry, and it seems as if things are progressing faster than ever these days. Check out some of the things we are researching these days.

Drywall is one of the most common materials used in construction, but it is also one of the most challenging to work with. It requires a lot of skill, time and effort to install and finish drywall properly. However, there are some innovations in drywall technology that aim to make this process easier, faster and more efficient. Here are some of the latest developments in this field:

- Prefabricated drywall soffit framing system: This system, developed by Armstrong Ceiling Solutions, simplifies the construction of soffits by using factory-notched main beams that can be bent and clicked into shape right out of the box. This eliminates the need for jigs and onsite fabrication time, and reduces labor and material costs. The system can handle various soffit designs and dimensions, and is compatible with standard drywall screws and accessories.

- Drywall finishing robot: This robot, created by Canvas, is able to apply finishing compound and smooth out drywall on its own, using a vision system and a laser-scanning system to understand the geometry of the building. The robot can work on large sections of drywall, as well as hard-to-reach areas like high spaces and corners. The robot can achieve a Level 5 finish on the drywall, which is the highest rating on the Gypsum Association's scale. The robot is controlled by a tablet, where the worker can set the parameters and monitor the progress.

- Chromium-coated trowel: This trowel, designed by Bianko ProFlex, is a new tool for drywall skim coat, finishing coat plaster and drywall compound. The trowel has a chromium coating that allows a quicker application and an easier and faster cleaning of the blade. The trowel also helps workers achieve walls that will remain clear with no marks.

- Project management software: This software, such as eSUB, is a new way of managing drywall projects more efficiently and effectively. The software allows contractors to track and document every aspect of their projects, from materials and labor to schedules and budgets. The software also enables better communication and collaboration among team members, clients and stakeholders. The software can also integrate with other tools and platforms, such as accounting software, BIM software and cloud storage.

It's amazing the developments that are occuring in our industry, and it allows us opportunities to examine how we can integrate new technologies into helping our customers better meet their project goals. Though we haven't adapted everything we included in this blog directly into our business as of this writing, you can be assured we are researching each one to evaluate how it might fit in our business model.

Drywall installation requires some skill and patience, but it can also be a rewarding DIY project. One of the most important steps in drywall installation is finishing, which involves applying joint compound and tape to cover the seams and corners of the panels, as well as sanding and priming the surface for painting. A great drywall finish can make a big difference in the appearance and durability of your walls. Here are some tips on how to make a great drywall finish:
